Maya, a 15-year-old from Dublin, experienced low mood, declining grades, and social withdrawal over a 12 month period. She reported insomnia, feelings of worthlessness, and occasional thoughts that worried her parents but no active intent to self-harm.

Initial Assessment A comprehensive psychological assessment including mood inventories, risk assessment, family history, and functional analysis. Parental input  informed the care plan.

Therapeutic approach

Maya began therapy with person centred therapy supplemented by Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and offer psycho-education. Psychodynamic therapy helped Maya understand her unconscious thoughts, impulses and defences. Grounding techniques were introduced to help her manage anxiety in real-time.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

For sleep hygiene, activity scheduling, and cognitive restructuring.

Psychodynamics

Maya discovered her unconscious influences - defences and past experiences underlining her challenges.

Parental Guidance

Maya's parents participated in a separate parental guidance session to help them understand and learn strategies to assist.

Positive Reinforcement

Maya worked with her therapist to identify and challenge negative thought patterns that fuelled her anxiety and depressive moods.

Progress and outcome

Maya’s mood gradually improved with regular sessions; Maya re-engaged with two extracurricular activities. Maya reported finding self-acceptance and a reduction to negative emotions.

Sleep patterns normalised with active behavioural strategies.

School attendance and grades stabilised and began to improve.

“Talking about what was happening made it less scary. My therapist helped me understand why I felt stuck and gave me ways to get out of bed and connect with friends again.”
