Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) affects how the brain interprets sensory information from the environment, leading to challenges with touch, sound, movement, and more.
Individuals with SPD may be overly sensitive (hypersensitive) or under-responsive (hyposensitive) to sensory input, which can impact daily life, emotional regulation, and social interactions. SPD is common among children but can also affect adults.
An SPD assessment provides clarity on sensory challenges and how they affect behaviour, focus, learning, and emotional well-being.
Early identification allows for personalized strategies to improve comfort, reduce stress, and enhance daily functioning.
With the right support, individuals can gain better self-regulation skills, leading to improved confidence and quality of life.

Sensory processing disorder can affect people of all ages from infants to adults. It is estimated that 1 in 20 people may have sensory differences. It can occur in people with other developmental disorders, such as autism, ADHD and learning disabilities but can also exist on its own.
If you know someone with sensory differences, the best way to support them is to educate yourself about the disorder and be understanding and patient. Be mindful of their sensory sensitivities and try to provide a calm and sensory friendly environment for them. Encourage and celebrate their successes and seek professional help if needed.
The sensory integration assessment is designed to be play-based and non-threatening. Your child will be supported throughout the process, and much of the assessment will feel like play, helping them feel at ease and comfortable.
