What are Psycho-Educational Assessments?

A psycho-educational assessment can pinpoint specific learning difficulties (SLDs) like dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia in children aged 8 and up, as well as in teens and adults.

For example, this young patient’s story about dyslexia shows how an assessment revealed particular learning needs and helped guide practical support at school.

During a three-hour in-person session at BetterCare, our educational psychologists:

  • Identify learning strengths and challenges
  • Assess intellectual abilities
  • Explore emotional and behavioural factors that may impact learning

We assess all SLDs in one thorough session using standardised tests and measures, evaluating key skills such as:

  • Reading and writing
  • Mathematics and problem-solving
  • Attention, concentration, and memory
  • Social-emotional well-being

After the assessment, you’ll receive a comprehensive report detailing findings and recommendations. Our reports are recognised by schools and all government/state bodies, including the Department of Health, Department of Education, and Department of Social Protection.

Our psychologists can also refer and liaise with the BetterCare team to ensure any future appointments or interventions are arranged smoothly and stress-free.

What can a Psycho-Educational Assessment do?

A psycho-educational assessment can be extremely valuable for children, teens, and students who are experiencing challenges with school attainment or learning difficulties.

By identifying a child’s unique strengths and areas needing support, these assessments provide parents and teachers with clear insights to tailor learning strategies effectively.

Assessments can also help with educational accommodations, including:

  • Exemptions from certain subjects, such as foreign languages (e.g., Irish)
  • Use of assistive technology in school, like laptops or tablets
  • Reasonable accommodations in certificate examinations through the RACE or DARE schemes

With a comprehensive educational needs assessment, you gain a clear understanding of your child’s learning profile and the practical steps needed to support their educational journey.

A psycho-educational assessment can help determine if your child has specific learning difficulties (SLDs) or areas where extra support is needed. Signs that your child may benefit from an assessment include:

  • Reading or writing difficulties: Trouble decoding words, reading fluently, spelling, or writing clearly (dyslexia, dysgraphia).
  • Math challenges: Difficulty understanding numbers, performing calculations, or grasping basic math concepts (dyscalculia).
  • Attention or focus issues: Trouble concentrating, staying on task, or following instructions (ADHD).
  • Motor coordination problems: Difficulty with handwriting, using tools, or organizing tasks (dyspraxia).
  • Emotional or behavioural concerns: Anxiety, frustration, or low confidence impacting learning.

A child learning assessment or educational needs assessment provides parents and teachers with clear insights into strengths and challenges, helping to plan targeted support strategies.
