Forensic Psychiatry Service

At BetterCare™ Mental Health Services, we provide independent forensic psychiatric assessments for individuals involved in legal and court proceedings. Our service supports solicitors, courts, and legal representatives by delivering professional psychiatric evaluations tailored to the specific legal questions raised in each case.

We understand the importance of timely, thorough, and objective assessments within the legal system. Assessments are conducted by experienced forensic psychiatrists with expertise in mental health, psychological assessment, and medico-legal reporting.
How the Referral Process Works

All forensic psychiatry cases must begin with a formal referral from a solicitor or the court.

A solicitor’s instruction letter is required before any assessment can proceed. The letter should clearly outline:

  • The purpose of the assessment
  • The specific legal questions to be addressed
  • Any relevant court deadlines or hearing dates

Examples of requested opinions may include:

  • Fitness to plead
  • Exclusion or presence of psychiatric disorders
  • Mental health considerations relevant to legal proceedings
  • Capacity and risk-related opinions where appropriate
To ensure a comprehensive review, the following documentation should be provided in advance where available:

  • Book of Evidence
  • Previous psychological assessments
  • Relevant psychiatric or medical history
  • GP or hospital records
  • Any additional reports relevant to the case
All documentation is reviewed prior to the consultation so that the assessing clinician can determine the scope of the assessment and advise on the most appropriate next steps.
Assessments are typically conducted online through secure video consultation.

Clients may include individuals who are:

  • In custody or prison
  • On bail
  • Living in the community
A visual online consultation is required and usually involves an interview of approximately one hour, although longer or additional appointments may be necessary depending on the complexity of the case.

Following review of the documentation and consultation, a medico-legal report may be prepared where appropriate.
BetterCare™ Mental Health Services is committed to providing:

  • Independent and objective assessments
  • Professional and confidential service
  • Clear communication with legal representatives
  • Timely scheduling and reporting where possible
  • Trauma-informed and respectful care for all clients
